A simple description of a sleigh bed would include a scrolled curved footboard with a headboard and so resembling a sleigh. The design originated from the early nineteenth century American and French empire, which was ultimately inspired by the bed designs of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
But where did the bed originate? The early stages of the bed design were little more than batches of straw until the Egyptians came along with their bedsteads high and aloft whereby steps would have to be climbed in order to achieve a much needed rest. Beds in those days possessed headboards decorated with jewels and such like and would be moulded from wood or metallic materials.
To see what an early bed looked like pop along to St Fagans National History Museum, Wales where the Odyssey experience can be enjoyed. The original bed was fashioned of the trunk of an old olive tree. Early Greek beds comprised of a wooden frame upon which animal hides were stretched. In times to come beds were to become more ornamental, made of bronze complete with ivory veneers, beautiful woods and feet made of silver.
The Roman bed comprising of feather and reed stuffed mattresses were a more luxuriant affair than previously experienced. Cushions scattered about the top for the sleeper’s head added comfort while bronze frames provided stability off the floor or ground. The Romans had beds built with specific functions in mind from the slumber bed to the marital bed to the table bed and the funeral pyre bed. Those Romans – they thought of everything!
Whether you prefer a canopy bed, a camp bed or a futon, there has never been more choice out there today. If you have an inclination toward a wood sleigh bed, go for it!
